Bilingual (English/Spanish) Educational Advocate

Since 1969, Massachusetts Advocates for Children (MAC) has been a mission-driven advocacy and direct service nonprofit organization dedicated to removing barriers to educational and life opportunities for Massachusetts children and youth. Based in Boston, we employ a racial equity lens to improve educational options for all young people, while also helping to improve lives, one family at a time. 

MAC seeks a committed individual to work with our team to provide outreach, training, and advocacy support to parents of children with disabilities in the city of Lawrence. The Bilingual Educational Advocate will work under the supervision of MAC’s Senior Bilingual Attorney.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Working with the MAC team and our community partner, provide outreach, advocacy support and workshops regarding special education for Lawrence parents of children with disabilities.

  • Participate in internal MAC planning meetings and play an active role in organizing and leading public meetings in Lawrence.

Required Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Strong oral communication skills in Spanish (native fluency preferred), ability to comprehend and communicate in English

  • Well-organized, strong attention to detail, and good people skills

  • Some understanding of disability inequities and special education rights

  • Understanding of issues and concerns faced by parents who have children with disabilities

  • Ability to manage personal schedule and meet work deadlines

  • Ability to be flexible and to work independently and as a part of a team

Preferred Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Resident of Lawrence with knowledge of the community and Lawrence Public schools strongly preferred;

  • Knowledge or experience regarding provision of special education in Lawrence or other urban areas;

  • Knowledge or experience with children and youth with behavioral challenges;

  • Knowledge or experience working with parents or individuals with limited English proficiency.

Compensation:

  • This is a part-time, 2-day-per-week position. The salary range will be between $20/hour-$25/hour, depending on experience.
