For more than a decade, MAC has provided the range of training and advocacy services necessary to help ensure that children with autism can access the special education services vital to their development. MAC formed the group Parents Concerned About Autism in Lawrence to provide training and teach advocacy skills to Latinx parents of children with autism.
History
A Lawrence parent of a child with autism, attending the same event as a MAC staff member, recognized the staff member from her previous presentations about special education law and knew she had her own son with autism. Desperate for help, the determined parent followed the staff member into the bathroom, “We have different special education laws in Lawrence (a city north of Boston) than you have in Bedford (a suburb outside of Boston). How do we get good laws in Lawrence like you have for your son?” This parent gathered other families to meet with staff from MAC, who listened to their stories and concerns. Since then, MAC has been regularly meeting with this ever-expanding group of empowered parents. These parents now know that Lawrence has the same laws as other cities, it just takes a lot of work to get the law implemented.
