Issue

District failed to implement accommodations in student’s IEP requiring “extended time (100%) or reduction of size and length of assignment” accommodations.

Finding

Noncompliance:

Teacher denied parent’s request for an extension at end of school year when student was hospitalized. District submitted corrective action through an agreement between the principal and parent providing extended time for student to complete the assignment in light of documented medical emergencies impacting the student’s ability to communicate with the teacher. DESE accepts the corrective action but requires further action.

Compliance:

District provided a reduction/length of assignments.

Corrective Action

By 9/17, District must send DESE documentation of a review of student’s accommodations and expectations for implementation with student’s general education teachers for SY20-21 and SY21-22 addressing specific guidance on implementing the extra time accommodation and ways staff may document the provision of this accommodation.
